Bodor v. Maximus Federal Services, Inc. (2020)

Background: Filed in 2020, Bodor v. Maximus Federal Services, Inc. revealed that Maximus, a major student loan servicer, was engaging in illegal collection activity against thousands of federal student loan borrowers who submitted Borrower Defense to repayment claims to the U.S. Department of Education.

The case revealed that while Maximus had an obligation to cease all collection activity while individuals’ Borrower Defense applications were pending, the company unlawfully continued to process wage garnishments, tax refund offsets, and Social Security offsets against Plaintiff Jaimaria Bodor and other similar borrowers.

Impact: The case secured a first-of-its-kind settlement that brought greater scrutiny to Maximus’ unsavory actions and won significant relief for student loan borrowers.
